What is a remix?

A remix is a retelling of an already created work. Wicked is a remix of The Wizard of Oz. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is a remix of Hamlet. A Study in Emerald and The Great Mouse Detective are both remixes of Sherlock Holmes. The idea is to retain the spirit of the original story or art while writing or drawing something in the style and manner of your choosing. Some ways to remix a story are:
- retell it in someone else's point of view
- write a prequel or sequel
- take the story and add or subtract an element (e.g. magic)
- take the story and change its setting, location, or time period
- take a minor event in the original story and focus on it
- take a minor character in the original story and focus on them
Some ways to remix a piece of art are:- redrawing it from a different perspective
- transplanting the same characters and situation being depicted into a different universe
- extrapolating from the original art and drawing before or after the scene being depicted
- taking a minor event in the original art and focusing on it
- taking a minor character in the original art and focusing on them
In a remix challenge, you will be assigned an author or artist, and you will write or draw a remix of one of their fanworks. One of your fanworks will be remixed by someone else. A remix challenge is a great opportunity to flex some creative muscles and celebrate how transformative fandom can be!
